Online superstore Amazon's judgement day has come: it must charge sales tax in California starting tomorrow, September 15th. Being the largest of the 50 states, this isn't going to sit well with the many devoted customers who refer to Amazon for a tax-free solution to retail shopping. Unfortunately, it's been something the Seattle, Washington-based online shopping outlet has known about for quite some time. In September of last year, Amazon said it would create 7,000 new jobs in California if sales tax could be pushed off to 2014, but Democratic legislators had already made their decision.
CNBC reports today that some customers are spending as much as $12,000 this week in a last move to avoid sales tax. They had all year to do this, so there's no reason to go crazy now. Of course, there will no longer be such good sales at Amazon on Black Friday since sales tax takes away the appeal. People will have to get their new Apple products at MacConnection or another online retailer from now on. At least people can go down with a bang for the buck today though.
