Apple invites press to event on October 23
Apple today issued invitations to all major members of the press, requesting that they make a special trip to San Jose for an event on the 23rd. This mystery event is to be held at the California Theatre, not Apple's usual meeting place. (The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco is typically where Apple holds press events.) It will take place at 10 a.m. Pacific time.
There are many who have speculated that Apple will be unveiling a smaller version of its tablet, the iPad, at this event. Apple-centered blog The Loop — known for accurate sources related to the company — and major technology publication AllThingsD both reported on October 12 that such a device would be announced on the exact date that Apple has now sent out invitations for. With one fact proven to be true, other rumors are likely to follow.
The original iPad was introduced in January 2010. It included a 9.7-inch display, a 1 GHz processor, 256 MB of RAM, and began a tablet revolution. Apple has been called the pioneer of the tablet, though it did exist before the company unveiled its first publicly available product. Since 2010, the iPad has been a tremendous success. It reached its third generation in March of this year and has been steadily growing, from the ecosystem to the operating system, iOS.
Many major corporations, including Amazon.com, Google, Samsung, and most recently Microsoft, have been quick to offer their own tablets, though none have proven to be as innovative and popular as Apple's. Perhaps it was the iPod that helped the Cupertino, Calif.-based corporation gain success in a market that was thought by many to be dead. Whatever the case, Apple's success could be about to get a little smaller, yet larger at the same time.
